A video guide to video strategy

This is my contribution to the third Carnival of journalism. This month it’s being hosted by Bryan over at Innovation in college media.

I have been trying to get some thoughts down about the recurring issue of teaching dreamweaver but Mark Comerford has said what I wanted to say, and better.

So instead I thought I would share something that occurred to me when I was driving in to work – I have a longish commute – quick guides to a the quality and point-and-shoot video strategy.

The quality strategy

The Point and Shoot strategy

In my defense. It’s been a long week.

  1. Good stuff… I’ve noticed that most reporters will jazz up their videos a bit. They then become better than point and shoot, but not broadcast quality.
I think that if newspapers want top notch videos they could employ a trained broadcast journalist to make them. But if not, then a few basic shots to illustrate a story should be ok.

  2. I’m so sick of everyone saying that we have to learn video. I’m a print news major for a reason! I want nothing to do with that junk!

  3. Amber,

The problem is that it isn’t that simple. Like it or not, video is part of what ‘print’ is these days.

If you don’t want to get involved with that ‘junk’ be prepared for a pretty limited career

  4. After mulling it overnight, I want to thank you for a great video assignment for my students. Always trying to tie video in with elements of literature as well as journalism…now I have a simple way for them to present an opinion (or argument). Plus it’s fun and they should enjoy it. Thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Love the videos. Very inspiring. But, I am curious as to where you got the jazz from? Do you know a good Creative Commons-type site for music, did you get a copyright OK to use the music, do you play jazz yourself, or is it — dare I ask — ripped off?

    Brilliant all the same.

  6. Actually, I wanted to ask you if you have any idea why the Flash film on the front of my video seems to not play for a lot of people unless they click on the cat icon to go into the site and then press the back button to go back to the front?
Sorry, not sure if you are open to answering questions, but thought I would ask just in case you are.

  7. Hi Mary.

Thanks for dropping by The Jazz is from Apples Garageband podcast music that comes with the programme, so are the sound effects. So it’s podsafe/royalty free.

Enjoyed the manga travellog. I’m not sure why your video may be sticking. Could be a streaming problem.
