Topix, Gannet and Newsquest

Technology blog Techcrunch has reported that

News search engine Topix.net has announced that has taken $15 million in additional funding from three large media companies, Tribune, Gannett and McClatchy. The company raised a round about 18 months ago for an undisclosed sum that was only said to be under $5 million. That funding came from Tribune, Gannet and Knight-Ridder, who have since been acquired by McClatchy.

Topix is an interesting site and, as the preston section proved, as local as it claims to be.

The range and depth of content alone mean it’s interesting enough on its own. But when you factor in that Gannet owns UK publishing organisation Newsquest who have “18 daily titles and almost 300 weekly newspapers“, it may be more interesting a s a sign of things to come.
